I don’t know about you, but I always get a little nervous when it comes to attempting to explain the Trinity. It isn’t that I have an aversion to it, but it isn’t a topic that is fully understood, and we do not see the terminology used in Scripture. What we see is each of the three Persons references both individually and collectively all working in perfect unity. I do have a YouTube video posted on this chapter, and I am going to link it for you, but I wanted to make sure I am clear in my statement – I am trying very hard to avoid the use of the verbiage “The Trinity is like…” as, to steal the words of a student I worked with, that is the beginning of heresy (thank you Sarah Hoke!)
But we are to read and interact with the full counsel of scripture and John 14 addresses all three Persons. Therefore, I will be addressing all three Persons. I normally don’t do a ton of links, but I’ll be linking a few trusted church websites with their commentary under each section to help in our understanding of each Person. To get an overarching definition of God check out this the What We Believe Page of Northland Church Kansas City. and Connect Church St. Louis.
God the Father
God the Father is normally the Person we think of as being this old man in the sky who is here to judge us. This is not an accurate depiction, and we need to move away from it. What we see in Scripture is that he is the Creator who cares about what he has made and in actively involved in the lives of people. He is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent (all powerful, all knowing, and all present). Jesus speaks of the relationship between himself as God the Son and God the Father in John 14:9-11.

God the Son
Referred to in Scripture as the Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, and Jesus Christ the second Person of the Trinity is God the Son. God the Son came to earth as the man Jesus, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, who lived a perfect, sinless life; dying on the cross as an atoning sacrifice and substitutionary death to save people from their sins and reconcile all who believe back to God. He was buried and rose again on the third day, appearing to the apostles before his ascent to heaven. The name of Jesus hold authority and in John 14:12-14 Jesus tells his disciples that anything they ask for in his name he will do.
God the Holy Spirit
The third Person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit. He is active throughout history along side God the Father and God the Son inspiring writing of Scripture. He is responsible for working the hearts of humankind to understand truth, convict men of sin, calls people to the saving faith in Christ, and causes regeneration in the souls of humans. At the moment of salvation, he indwells believers acting as the comforter Christ said he would send (John 14:15-17), and cultivate Christ-like character in believers, as well as distributing spiritual gifts to all who believe. His presence in the believer acts a seal, marking all who believe as reconciled to God and saved from eternal damnation.

Final Thoughts
If you follow the link to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 (regardless of how you feel about the current state of the SBC they do have excellent definitions here, which is why I use it), you’ll find many other verses that support the statements that are made about each person of the Trinity. You can also see from checking out some of the other links from some different churches that some statements may be more understandable than others.
I hope that you enjoy this much more theological blog, and hopefully I stayed far away from heresy!
